Macuti Lighthouse and Shipwreck

A rusting cargo ship beached directly in front of an active colonial lighthouse

At the northern point of Beira, on the long beach that gives Macuti its name, a rusted cargo ship sits in the sand directly in front of a working stone lighthouse. The lighthouse was built in 1904 by the Portuguese; the ship ran aground during a cyclone in the 1960s and was never towed away. The result is one of the most photographed scenes on the Mozambique coast — a quiet, slightly surreal pairing of working maritime infrastructure and abandoned wreckage.

The beach around the lighthouse is the most pleasant part of town for an evening walk; local families come out at sunset, fishermen launch small boats, and the wind off the Indian Ocean keeps it cool. Take care with valuables and avoid the beach after dark.

A story
The cargo ship Macuti ran aground at the lighthouse during a storm in the 1960s and was never salvaged. The rusted hull is still there, settled into the sand a few metres from the still-operating lighthouse — a juxtaposition with no other parallel in Africa.
