Maputo City Hall

Neoclassical city hall completed in 1947, the formal northern edge of Praça da Independência

The Conselho Municipal sits at the top of Praça da Independência, looking down across the square to the cathedral. Finished in 1947, the building wears its late-colonial ambition heavily: a long Corinthian portico, a heavy attic storey, and a pediment carved with the seal of Lourenço Marques. It is one of the few buildings in central Maputo that ignores the prevailing Art Deco for an unapologetic neoclassical look.

The hall houses the city government and is not normally open to visitors, but the front steps are a good place to sit and look back along the square. The square itself was repaved and re-landscaped in the early 2010s and is now one of the cleaner and better-maintained public spaces in the city.
