Getting There

By air. Maputo International Airport (MPM) sits 3 km north-west of the centre. LAM, South African Airways, TAP Portugal, Ethiopian, Kenya Airways, Qatar Airways and Turkish Airlines fly in. The most useful connections are the short hops from Johannesburg (around 50 minutes) and from Lisbon and Dubai for long-haul. A metered taxi to the centre costs around 600 meticais; agree the price before getting in if there is no meter.

Overland from South Africa. The Lebombo / Ressano Garcia border post on the N4 is the main road crossing — open 06:00 to 24:00. Cheetah Express, Intercape, City to City and other long-distance buses run daily from Johannesburg and Pretoria; the trip takes 8–10 hours including the border. The slower but more interesting alternative is the Shosholoza Meyl rail service from Johannesburg via Komatipoort, plus a local train onwards.

Overland from Eswatini. The Goba border is closer and quieter; minibus taxis run from Mbabane and Manzini.

By boat. The ferry to Inhaca Island leaves from the central catembe terminal twice a day in season.
