Eating Out

Maputo eats well. The Indian Ocean delivers prawns, lobster, calamari and line fish; the Portuguese left a love of grilled meat, piri-piri and chilled white wine; and the country's own kitchen runs to matapa (cassava leaves with peanuts and coconut), xima (maize porridge) and slow-cooked goat. Most travellers spend at least one evening on the Costa do Sol seafront, where a string of open-air grills serves charcoaled prawns by the kilo with cold Laurentina or 2M beer.
