Maputo has a strong cafe culture inherited from Portugal — bicas (espressos), pastries and people-watching from a pavement table. By night, the action moves to the bars and live-music venues around Polana and the seafront, plus the long-running artist hangouts in the Baixa. Marrabenta is the local rhythm; on a good night you can find it played live with horns and guitars in someone's back garden.
