Costa do Sol

The long sandy bayfront of north-east Maputo, lined with prawn grills and weekend crowds

The Costa do Sol is the long stretch of Maputo Bay seafront that runs north-east from the centre toward the salt pans and the airport. The beach itself is wide and sandy but the water is shallow, muddy at low tide and not really for swimming — go to Inhaca or Ponta do Ouro for that. What the Costa do Sol does well is food, sunset and people-watching.

The seafront is lined with open-air cervejarias and grill restaurants. Restaurante Costa do Sol (the original, going since 1933, in a salmon-pink colonial building right on the bay) is the most famous. On weekends the whole coast fills with families, walking groups, joggers and marrabenta bands set up on the promenade.
