Maputo–Katembe Bridge

3 km suspension bridge across Maputo Bay, the longest in Africa when it opened in 2018

The Ponte Maputo–Katembe is the city's newest landmark and one of the biggest infrastructure projects in Mozambican history. Designed by a Chinese consortium and opened in late 2018, the 680-metre main suspension span crosses the mouth of Maputo Bay to link the capital with Katembe on the south shore — a journey that previously required a slow ferry.

The bridge is best seen from the Costa do Sol or from the south side at Katembe, especially at sunset when the bay turns gold and the cables backlight in silhouette. There is a pedestrian walkway on the western side, but most visitors simply drive across — the toll is modest and the view from the deck is one of the finest in the city. South of the bridge, the new road continues all the way to Ponta do Ouro and the South African border.
