Modernist national library on the edge of Tunduru Gardens

The Biblioteca Nacional de Moçambique sits on the lower edge of the Tunduru Gardens, a low modernist building of pale concrete and tinted glass from the late colonial period. It is the country's deposit library and holds the most complete collection of Mozambican publications anywhere — newspapers, books, journals, and the records of the long pre-independence underground press.

The reading rooms are open to the public during weekday hours; foreign visitors usually need to register on arrival but are generally welcomed. Even if you do not plan to read anything, the building is worth a few minutes' detour for the architecture and for the small rotating exhibitions in the entrance hall.
