Kurra Falls

Hydroelectric falls and dam in a forested valley south-east of the city

Kurra Falls is the major drop on the Sha River in the southern plateau, about 80 km from Jos. The river has been dammed for hydroelectric generation since the colonial era, and the impoundment above the falls is one of the older power schemes in Nigeria. The setting — wooded valley, lake behind the dam, water spilling over rocks — is one of the more attractive landscapes accessible from the city.

The site is usually open to visitors with permission from the power station office. Below the dam there are walking trails alongside the river. It is a longer trip than Assop Falls and works best as a full-day excursion, ideally with a local guide arranged through one of the Jos hotels. Roads in the area can be rough; a 4×4 is sensible in the wet season.
