Naraguta Leatherworks

Craft centre on the city's northern edge producing handmade leather goods

Naraguta on the northern outskirts of Jos has a long tradition of leatherwork — the result of a confluence of Fulani cattle-herding country, plateau tanning traditions, and a designated craft village set up by the state government in the 1970s. The result today is a strip of small workshops where you can see leather being cured, dyed, and worked by hand, and buy bags, sandals, belts, cushions, and the regional pouf-style stools straight from the artisans.

Prices are modest, the quality is variable but at the top end is genuinely good, and the cultural texture of the visit is the real draw. Bargaining is expected. Pair it with a visit to the National Museum complex and the tin mining heritage exhibits in town for a useful half-day of the plateau's craft and industrial story.
