Wase Rock

Towering volcanic plug rising from the plain south-east of Jos

Wase Rock is one of the most dramatic natural landmarks in Nigeria — a 300-metre-tall volcanic plug rising almost vertically from the flat plain of the Wase region, around three hours' drive south-east of Jos. It can be seen from a long distance away and is one of the largest such features in the country.

The rock is a known nesting site for white-backed vultures, and was designated as one of Africa's Important Bird Areas. Climbing is technical and not generally undertaken by visitors, but the approach by road and the views from the surrounding plain are striking on their own. Wase district has historically experienced inter-communal tensions; the trip is feasible but absolutely should be done with a knowledgeable local driver and after a careful security check.
