Inema Arts Center is the leading contemporary art space in Kigali, founded in 2012 by brothers Innocent and Emmanuel Nkurunziza in a converted building in Kacyiru. The gallery shows work by Rwandan and East African artists, with a focus on painting, sculpture, and mixed media. The name — Inema means "beautiful" in Kinyarwanda — sets the tone: this is a place that takes art seriously and presents it well.
The centre runs a residency programme for artists and hosts regular events, open mic nights, and dance performances in its courtyard. It is open to visitors most days and doubles as a working studio where you can sometimes see artists at work. The attached café is a pleasant spot for a coffee between gallery visits, and the gift shop sells original artworks at accessible prices.
