Kandt House Museum occupies the former home of Richard Kandt, the German resident whose colonial administration helped shape early Kigali. The museum now looks beyond the building's biography, with exhibits on precolonial Rwanda, German rule, and the natural environment.
It is smaller and quieter than Kigali's genocide-related sites, but it fills an important gap: how Rwanda worked before colonialism and how the colonial capital began. The hilltop setting also gives a good view over the older centre of the city.
