Henriette-Bathily Women's Museum

Dedicated to the history and contemporary lives of Senegalese women, the Henriette-Bathily Museum displays photographs, clothing, household objects, and rotating exhibitions of work by women artists. The collection emphasises the everyday — cooking utensils, jewellery, ceremonial dress — and traces women's roles across different ethnic groups in Senegal.

It is a small, thoughtfully arranged museum that adds a quieter and more personal note to the heavier history elsewhere on the island.

A story
The museum was founded in 1994 by the Senegalese feminist activist Annette Mbaye d'Erneville and named for the historian Henriette Bathily. It moved from Gorée to a more visible location on the Dakar mainland in 2014 to attract more visitors — but the original Gorée premises remain in use as an annexe.
