Getting Around

The island of N'Dar is small enough to walk entirely in under half an hour. Most visitors stay on the island or the Langue de Barbarie and do not need any transport within the central area. Horse-drawn carriages — calèches — are the traditional way to get around and are available for hire from the island; they are genuinely useful for getting to Guet N'Dar on the peninsula or for a slow tour of the island streets.

To get to the Sor mainland district, you can walk across the Pont Faidherbe or take a pirogue (small boat) across the channel. Sor has the main market, the gare routière, and most of the budget accommodation.

Taxis are available for trips further afield — to the Djoudj National Park (about 60km north) or the Langue de Barbarie National Park (about 20km south). Negotiate the fare before you get in. Organized day trips to both parks are offered by most hotels and guest houses, and are often the most practical option.
