The Stade de Linguère, commonly known as Stade Mawade Wade, is Saint-Louis's main football stadium, sitting on the island near the centre of town. It holds around 20,000 people and comes alive on match days when local clubs play. Football is a serious business in Senegal, and attending a match here — if the timing works out — gives you a very different view of the city than the heritage tourism circuit.
The stadium is also used for concerts and public events, particularly during the jazz festival in May when the island fills with music and the main venues overflow into any large open space available.
