Bunce Island

Ruined slave-trade fort in the Sierra Leone River, reached by boat from Freetown

Bunce Island is a sobering boat trip from Freetown into the Sierra Leone River, where the ruins of a British slave-trading fort stand among trees and tidal water. From the 17th to 19th centuries, enslaved people were held here before being shipped across the Atlantic, especially to plantations in North America.

The site is fragile and quiet rather than polished. That is part of its force: crumbling walls, old gun positions, and the river setting make the history feel close without much mediation. Go with a knowledgeable guide, both for transport and for the context that turns the ruins into something more than stones in the bush.
