Getting There

Freetown's Lungi International Airport is across the bay from the city — a long-standing logistical headache that travellers should plan around. Options after landing include a water taxi (Sea Coach Express or Sea Bird), a hovercraft, a Pelican Water Taxi, or the much longer road route around the estuary via Bo. The water taxi is the standard choice — about 30 minutes plus transfers — but operations depend on weather and time of day.

Overland connections run to Bo, Kenema and Makeni on tarred but variable roads, and across the border into Guinea via Pamelap or to Liberia via Bo Waterside. There are no passenger ferries from neighbouring countries.
