The peninsula beaches south of Freetown are the obvious day trips — Lakka, Tokeh, Bureh, and River No. 2 are all 30 minutes to two hours by road. Up the hills behind the city, the Tacugama Chimpanzee Sanctuary makes a half-day; for an overnight trip, the Banana Islands offshore are reachable by boat from Kent.
Allow much more time than the distances suggest. The single peninsula road is slow and the weather can turn the dirt sections into mud.
