Freetown traffic is famously bad and getting worse. The single coast road from Aberdeen into the centre is congested at almost any hour, and the steep hills mean there are few alternative routes. Plan for journeys to take twice what the distance suggests.
For visitors the easiest options are agreed-price taxis (negotiate before getting in) or ride-hailing apps where they operate. Shared poda-podas (minibuses) and three-wheel keke-kekes are cheap but bewildering for first-timers and best left to a confident traveller with a local guide.
Walking is fine in the centre during daylight; pavements are unreliable and street lighting is poor after dark.
