The Big Market — also called Freetown Craft Market — is a long, low colonial-era covered market on Wallace Johnson Street. It is the best place in the city to buy local crafts: gara cloth, basketry, beads, wood carvings, country cloth, and the small batik bags that have become almost a Krio uniform.
Prices are negotiable and traders are persistent but friendly. Cash only. Go in the morning when the stalls are fully open and the heat is still bearable.
