Jeffreys Bay

Eastern Cape surf town famous for Supertubes, long beaches, shells, and a laid-back J-Bay rhythm.

Jeffreys Bay, usually shortened to J-Bay, is South Africa's best-known surf town. It sits on the Eastern Cape's Sunshine Coast, where long Indian Ocean beaches, surf shops, shell stalls, and low-key cafes give the town a holiday rhythm without making it feel too polished.

The name that matters to surfers is Supertubes, one of the great right-hand point breaks. You can surf it if you know what you are doing, watch from the dunes if you do not, or learn on gentler breaks closer to the main beach.

J-Bay is not only about boards and swell. The Jeffreys Bay Shell Museum explains the town's long shell-collecting habit, Noorsekloof Nature Reserve gives you a short green walk through coastal bush, and Paradise Beach stretches out when the main beach feels busy.
