Mkoani

The third of Pemba's towns sits on the deep-water harbour at the island's southwestern tip and exists, almost entirely, because of the harbour. The Azam Marine ferry from Stone Town docks here daily, and most of the island's diesel, cement, and consumer goods come in through Mkoani's quay.

There is nothing else to do — Mkoani has perhaps a thousand inhabitants, a single hotel of any note (the long-established Jondeni Guesthouse), and a few cafés near the port — but if you are dropping off the ferry it is the practical first stop. Onward transport to Chake-Chake or further north is by shared dala-dala or by taxi.
