Ngezi covers 3,000 hectares of dense indigenous rainforest at Pemba's northern tip — a fragment of the climax forest that once covered most of the island before centuries of clove planting and agricultural clearing reduced it to a few patches. It is one of the few places in East Africa where you can still see the Pemba flying fox, a giant fruit bat with a 1.6-metre wingspan, hanging in roosts during the day.
A 4 km marked nature trail loops through the forest from the ranger station and takes about 90 minutes at an unhurried pace. Other Pemba endemics — the Pemba green pigeon, the Pemba scops owl, the Pemba white-eye — are all here for keen birders. A small entrance fee goes to the conservation programme; bring water and insect repellent.
