Lake Ichkeul is a brackish lake about 30 km south-west of Bizerte, set against the steep wooded slopes of Jebel Ichkeul. It is a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of the most important wintering grounds in the western Mediterranean for migratory waterfowl: hundreds of thousands of ducks, coots, geese, and flamingos pass the cold months here every year.
The park has a small ecomuseum near the entrance, with displays on the geology, hydrology, and birdlife, and a couple of walking trails that climb the lower slopes of Jebel Ichkeul for a panoramic view. November to March is the season for the bird-watching; in summer the lake is hot, the birds have left, and the visit is mostly about the landscape.
The park is reachable by car from Bizerte in about 45 minutes; there is no public transport. A small entrance fee covers both the park and the museum.
