Zambezi Escarpment

Rugged southern backdrop to Mana Pools, feeding springs and wildlife corridors down to the floodplain.

The Zambezi escarpment rises south of Mana Pools, a rugged wall of hills that defines the park's inland edge. It is not the part of Mana most visitors come to photograph, but it shapes everything below: drainage lines, springs, dry-season wildlife movement, and the sense of enclosure that makes the floodplain feel like a great natural amphitheatre.

The escarpment country is rougher, hotter, and less accessible than the riverfront. Chitake Springs sits below it, and wildlife funnels between hill country and the Zambezi valley as water becomes scarce. For travellers who return to Mana more than once, this southern edge is where the park begins to feel deeper and less familiar.
