Himchari

Forested headland with waterfall and Bay of Bengal views

A scenic headland 18 kilometres south of Cox's Bazar town, where a small seasonal waterfall drops through forested hillside to the beach below. The setting is one of the prettiest along the coast: forested slopes on one side, open sea on the other, and a beach that is noticeably less littered than the main town stretch. Viewpoints on the hillside above the waterfall look out over the Bay of Bengal.

Best visited in the early morning when the light is good and the crowds have not yet arrived from town. Reachable by beach jeep along the coastal track or by road — the coastal route is more scenic. The waterfall runs strongest between August and October; in the dry season it may be reduced to a trickle or gone entirely. Himchari is a common stop on the circuit between Cox's Bazar town and Inani beach.

A story
Himchari sits at the edge of the Himchari National Park, a 1,729-hectare reserve established in 1980 to protect the hilly terrain behind the beach. The park is home to Asian elephants and a number of deer and monkey species, though wildlife sightings are far from guaranteed on a casual beach visit. The waterfall that gives the site its reputation is seasonal — it runs properly only during and just after the monsoon, typically July through October.
