Dinajpur

North Bangladeshi town with terracotta temples, royal ruins, and a large old tank.

Dinajpur is a north Bangladeshi town that looks ordinary at first, but has a stronger set of day-trip anchors than many larger places. Its appeal is in old brick, terracotta, water, and the slow rhythm of a provincial town close to the Indian border.

The outstanding sight is Kantajew Temple, one of Bangladesh's finest terracotta Hindu temples. Closer to town, Dinajpur Rajbari gives you the remains of a zamindar palace complex, while Ramsagar National Park centres on a large 18th-century tank surrounded by trees.

Dinajpur is not a polished tourist town. Come if you are already travelling through northern Bangladesh and want a day with real local texture rather than another bus connection.

Things to Do

Dinajpur's main sights are spread around town and the nearby countryside. Hire local transport for the temple and Ramsagar, then leave time for the palace ruins if you like crumbling old estates.
