One of the few cinemas in Bhutan, screening a mix of Bollywood features, occasional Hollywood releases, and Bhutanese films in Dzongkha. The programming is erratic by Western standards — check the board outside for what's showing. An evening at Peling Cinema gives a genuine insight into popular Bhutanese entertainment culture: the audience reactions to Bollywood set pieces are enthusiastic, and a Dzongkha-language film provides a rare window into contemporary Bhutanese storytelling. Tickets are cheap.

A story
Bhutan had no cinemas until the 1990s — television was also banned until 1999. The country's film culture is still young, but Bhutanese cinema has been developing rapidly since the early 2000s. Peling Cinema is one of the few places in the capital where you can see both Bollywood films (enormously popular in Bhutan) and locally produced Dzongkha-language films.
