Changangkha Lhakhang

12th-century hilltop temple overlooking the city

A medieval temple perched on a spur of rock above the city, dedicated to Chenrezig, the deity of compassion. The inner shrine holds a large image of Chenrezig in his eleven-headed form, surrounded by attendant figures and butter lamps. The outer courtyard has a row of prayer wheels and a clear view over the rooftops of Thimphu to the forested hills beyond. The steep lane up from the road is part of the experience — locals make the climb daily.

A story
Changangkha Lhakhang is one of the oldest temples in the Thimphu valley, founded in the 12th century by Lama Phajo Drugom Zhigpo. Bhutanese parents bring newborns here to receive a name and blessing from the presiding monk — a practice that has continued for centuries. The temple's small courtyard commands a sweeping view over central Thimphu.
