Kampong Ayer Cultural and Tourism Gallery

Located within Kampong Ayer itself — accessible only by water taxi — the Cultural and Tourism Gallery is the best introduction to the history and life of the world's largest water village. The museum traces the history of the stilt village from its origins in the 7th century through the colonial period to the present day, with models of traditional architecture, displays of traditional crafts, and historical photographs.

The building itself sits on stilts above the river, and reaching it is part of the experience. Admission is free. Water taxis stop nearby on request — tell the driver you want the Kampong Ayer museum. After visiting, walk the boardwalks of the surrounding village, which extend in every direction and are perfectly safe to explore independently. Local children will likely want to practise their English.
