The Royal Regalia Museum is free to enter and holds a remarkable collection of ceremonial objects belonging to the Sultan of Brunei — the world's wealthiest head of state. The collection includes the coronation regalia, the royal chariot, gifts from foreign heads of state, and a recreation of the throne room. It is less stuffy than it sounds.
The building, opened in 1992 to commemorate the Sultan's Silver Jubilee, is impressive from the outside — a cream-coloured dome on Jalan Sultan. Inside, you will be asked to remove your shoes and store your bags. The galleries are well-maintained and the labelling is thorough. Even if you have no particular interest in royalty, the sheer scale and extravagance of the objects on display makes for compelling viewing. Allow an hour.
