Banteay Chhmar is a village and temple complex in northwestern Cambodia, close to the Thai border and well beyond the easy Angkor circuit. The ruins date from the Angkorian period, but the mood is very different from Siem Reap: fewer visitors, more silence, and a stronger sense that the jungle is still negotiating with the stone.
The main draw is Banteay Chhmar Temple, one of the great Khmer temple complexes outside Angkor. Its bas-reliefs, face towers, broken galleries, and satellite shrines reward slow wandering. The village beside it provides simple services, homestays, guides, and community tourism rather than polished resort infrastructure.
This is a place for travellers who can handle rough edges. Access is usually from Sisophon, and you should check current border-area security advice before committing to the trip.
