Anlong Veng

Remote northwestern Cambodian town tied to the final years of the Khmer Rouge.

Anlong Veng is not an easy or cheerful stop. Its travel interest comes from the final years of the Khmer Rouge, when leaders including Pol Pot and Ta Mok retreated to this remote corner of northwestern Cambodia. Their houses, graves, and trial sites are scattered between the town and the Dangrek Mountains near the Thai border.

That makes Anlong Veng a dark-history destination rather than a classic sightseeing town. Ta Mok's House overlooks a strange artificial lake; Pol Pot's Cremation Site is a bare, uncomfortable place under a simple shelter; the mountain road gives views that are beautiful enough to complicate the mood.

Check current border security advice before planning a trip. The area is close to the Cambodia-Thailand frontier, and official advisories can change quickly. Landmines and unexploded ordnance remain a serious risk in parts of the border region, so stay on roads and known paths.
