Huasi Mosque

The Huasi Mosque is the central institution of the Huasi Sufi order and one of the most important Naqshbandiyya-affiliated sites in China. The complex includes the main mosque, a mausoleum for the founders of the order, and residential buildings for religious students. The style is distinct from mainstream Chinese mosque architecture — domed halls and Central Asian tilework appear alongside more familiar Chinese elements.

The Huasi Gong Bei mausoleum at the centre of the complex is an active pilgrimage destination, visited by devotees from Sufi communities across the northwest. Visitors can observe from the courtyard; the inner shrine areas are reserved for Muslims.

A story
The Huasi order — also called Khufiyya — is one of the four main Sufi brotherhoods based in Linxia. Its founder, Ma Laichi, returned from Mecca in the eighteenth century and introduced new forms of Sufi practice that spread rapidly through northwest China. His descendants became the hereditary leaders of the order, a dynasty of religious authority that continues to this day.
