South Gate Mosque (Nanguan Mosque)

The Nanguan Mosque stands near the centre of Linxia and is one of the most active religious sites in the city. The architecture blends Chinese pavilion forms with Islamic symbolism — the green-tiled roofs, the crescent finials, the calligraphy panels above the entrance — in the way that characterises Chinese mosque design in the northwest. Friday prayers draw worshippers from across the city and surrounding villages.

The mosque complex includes a courtyard where older men gather to talk outside prayer times, and a madrasa attached to the main building. Non-Muslim visitors are generally welcome outside prayer times; dress modestly and ask at the gate before entering the prayer hall.

A story
The South Gate Mosque is one of the oldest in Linxia, its current form largely rebuilt after the destruction of the Hui uprisings and subsequent Qing reprisals in the 1870s. The rebuilding itself became a statement of communal resilience — the mosque was made larger and more prominent than before, visible from the main market streets.
