Laohua Mosque

The Laohua Mosque is one of the oldest religious foundations in Linxia and represents the mainstream Sunni Hanafi tradition that predominates among the Hui. The building sits in a quieter part of the city, west of the main bazaar, and retains a more traditional Chinese mosque form than some of the newer structures — timber-framed halls set around a long rectangular courtyard, with a minaret that has been rebuilt in a more Central Asian style in recent decades.

The mosque is an active place of worship and education. The courtyard is calm on weekday mornings, and the latticed windows of the main prayer hall cast geometric shadows on the stone floor. Photography inside is not permitted.

A story
The Laohua Mosque belongs to the Hanafi tradition and was for centuries a centre of classical Islamic scholarship in the northwest. Scholars trained here in Arabic and Persian texts carried their learning to Sufi communities across Gansu and Qinghai — one reason Linxia became known, among Chinese Muslims, as a city of religious learning as much as commerce.
