Zhangjiajie Glass Bridge

The Zhangjiajie Glass Bridge spans the Zhangjiajie Grand Canyon, 430 metres long and suspended 300 metres above the canyon floor on transparent glass panels. The Grand Canyon itself is a separate attraction from the main Wulingyuan park — a distinct gorge system with a canyon floor trail of several kilometres, a zip line, and a glass slide that deposits riders at the base of the gorge. The bridge is the headline feature but the canyon walk is worth a full half-day.

The glass panels are 120 millimetres thick and the structure was tested by having a hydraulic press crack one panel while fully loaded with visitors; the bridge remained stable. Knowing this does not make walking on it feel entirely rational. Tickets cost around ¥138 for the bridge and canyon combination; timed entry is required and booking in advance is strongly advised during peak season. The site is about 40 kilometres east of Wulingyuan village, most easily reached by car.

A story
The bridge was designed by Israeli architect Haim Dotan and opened in 2016. At 430 metres long and 300 metres above the canyon floor, it was immediately the world's longest and highest glass-bottomed bridge. When it opened to visitors in August 2016 it was so popular that ticket sales sold out within two weeks and the bridge was temporarily closed three weeks after opening to manage the overcrowding. Authorities subsequently introduced a reservation system and daily visitor cap.
