Getting Around

The city centre is manageable on foot; the walk from the main railway station to the Dongguan Mosque takes about 20 minutes. Buses cover most of the city network and cost 1 to 2 yuan. Taxis are inexpensive by Chinese standards — a cross-city trip typically costs 15 to 25 yuan — and Didi works well. For Kumbum Monastery (25 kilometres south), take a minibus from outside the south gate of the main bus station (frequent departures, about 8 yuan, 40 minutes) or take a taxi for around 50 to 70 yuan one way.

Cycling is possible on the flat central streets but the hills in the northern and southern parts of the city make it less practical than in many Chinese cities. Shared bikes (Hello Bike and others) are available. The city operates a BRT (bus rapid transit) system along the main east-west corridor.
