Xining mixes Tibetan, Hui Muslim, and Han Chinese culture in a way found nowhere else in China, and the best way to experience this is to move between its three great religious sites: the Dongguan Mosque in the Muslim quarter, Kumbum Monastery in the countryside to the south, and the Buddhist temples carved into the Northern Mountain above the city. The Qinghai Provincial Museum and the Tibetan Medicine Culture Museum are the strongest among a good collection of cultural institutions.
