Former Cheeloo University Campus

The former Cheeloo University campus, now incorporated into Shandong University's medical campus, preserves a collection of early-twentieth-century buildings in the hybrid Chinese-Western mission style — red brick with Chinese eave details, combining Western structural methods with Chinese decorative elements in a way characteristic of the Protestant educational enterprise in China. The main buildings date from the 1910s to the 1930s.

The campus is open to visitors (it remains a working university campus) and the buildings are in active use, which gives the historic fabric a lived-in quality rather than the museum character of fully preserved sites. The most interesting building is the main administrative hall, which combines a Western colonial facade with a Chinese curved roof. Worth 30 minutes for those interested in the intersection of Chinese and Western architectural traditions.

A story
Cheeloo University — named from the ancient state of Qi (Qi + Lu = Qilu/Cheeloo) — was founded in 1900 by Protestant missions and became one of the most respected universities in China. Its medical school and theology school attracted students from across the country; its campus buildings, designed by Western architects in a hybrid Chinese-Western style, are among the most distinctive early-twentieth-century buildings in Jinan. The university was merged into Shandong University in 1952.
