Jinan's position on the main Beijing–Shanghai rail corridor makes it an unusually convenient base for day trips. Mount Tai is 20 minutes by high-speed train to Tai'an, from which buses run directly to the mountain base — a climb-and-cable-car-back day is perfectly feasible. Qufu is 30 minutes by high-speed rail, making the Three Kong Sites an easy half-day excursion. Tai'an is a pleasant smaller city worth a look in its own right beyond the mountain connection.
