Li Qingzhao Memorial Hall

The Li Qingzhao Memorial Hall in the Baotu Spring park complex commemorates Jinan's most celebrated literary figure with displays of her biography, her poems, and their place in the ci poetry tradition of the Song Dynasty. The hall is housed in a classical courtyard building within the spring park, and the surrounding water and willow scenery is the kind of landscape she wrote about.

For readers of Chinese literature, this is a meaningful stop — Li Qingzhao's work is still widely read and taught, and seeing the springs and streets she grew up around adds context to the poems. For visitors without Chinese, the memorial hall's exhibits are limited in translation, but the setting is worth the walk from the main spring. Included in the Baotu Spring park entry fee.

A story
Li Qingzhao (1084–c.1155) is widely considered the greatest female poet in Chinese literary history. Born in Jinan, she grew up in the spring district and many of her most famous ci (lyric poems) draw on the landscape and climate of the city. After the Jin invasion of northern China forced her south in 1127, her later work takes on a tone of loss and longing for the north that gives it a biographical dimension missing from most classical Chinese poetry.
