The Bingzhou Road area has a concentration of antique shops, secondhand goods dealers, and curio sellers that forms Jinan's closest equivalent to a flea market. The quality ranges from genuine Qing Dynasty pieces to tourist-grade reproductions, and distinguishing between them requires knowledge or caution. The most interesting material tends to be the mundane historical — old photographs, Republican-era enamelware, Cultural Revolution propaganda items, and hand-carved seals.
Prices are negotiable and in many cases very low by any international standard; the market is busy on weekend mornings. Even without buying anything, the browsing provides insight into what ordinary objects from recent Chinese history look like and how much the country has changed in two generations.
