The Jining City Museum covers the history of the region from Neolithic times through the canal era and into the Republican period. The collection is strongest on Han Dynasty material — this region of southwestern Shandong has yielded significant Han-era tomb finds — and on the canal period, when Jining was one of the major entrepôts on the Beijing-Hangzhou route.
The canal trade exhibits are the most distinctive content: the weights, measures, ledgers, and commercial paraphernalia of the grain and salt trade that built Jining into a significant city between the 14th and 18th centuries. The museum is modern and well organized; entry is free.
