The Temple of Duke Zhou honours Ji Dan, the early Zhou statesman traditionally credited with shaping much of the ritual and political order that later Confucian scholars revered. It is one of China's notable temples dedicated to the Duke of Zhou, alongside the better-known sites in Luoyang and Baoji.
The temple makes a useful addition to Qufu's Confucian circuit because it points further back than Confucius himself, to the Zhou ideals that shaped the city's intellectual world. It is quieter than the main Confucius sites, but worth seeking out if you are interested in the roots of classical Chinese statecraft and ritual.
