Banco Nacional Ultramarino Building

The old Banco Nacional Ultramarino building in the centre of Dili is an oddity — a clean, modernist concrete structure put up in the early 1960s for the Portuguese overseas bank, surrounded by older colonial buildings of an entirely different idiom. The horizontal louvred sunscreens and the flat slab roof read more like São Paulo than Lisbon.

The building is still in use as a bank branch (now BNU Timor), and the ground floor banking hall is open during business hours. Worth a brief look if you are interested in mid-century tropical modernism; the surrounding streets are the closest thing Dili has to a downtown.
