Santa Cruz Cemetery

The Santa Cruz Cemetery is a quiet, slightly overgrown Catholic burial ground that looks like any other across the Lusophone world — until you remember what happened here in 1991. The graves of those killed in the massacre are scattered through the cemetery; many were dug days after the shooting by families who had to identify their dead from a hospital morgue.

There is no formal memorial inside, only the place itself. The cemetery sits east of the centre, about a kilometre south of the seafront. Visit in the morning when the light is gentler; the gates are open during daylight hours.

A story
On 12 November 1991 the Indonesian military opened fire on mourners who had walked here to lay flowers on the grave of Sebastião Gomes, killing at least 250. British journalist Max Stahl filmed it, smuggled the footage out, and the resulting international outrage turned the tide of opinion against the occupation.
