Government Palace

The Palácio do Governo is a long, low Portuguese colonial building of about 1960, painted ochre and white, facing the bay along Avenida de Marechal Carmona. It now houses the offices of the Prime Minister and the Council of Ministers, but in colonial days it served as the seat of the Portuguese governor.

You cannot go inside without business, but the seafront facade is one of the more attractive surviving examples of late-colonial architecture in the city, and the plaza in front is the natural starting point for a walk along Avenida de Portugal. The Government Palace, the National Parliament, and the surrounding ministry buildings together make up Dili's small administrative quarter.
