Sri Moolastaneswara Swamy Temple

Sri Moolastaneswara Swamy Temple in the Mulapeta neighbourhood is considered the oldest Sri Shaiva shrine in the Nellore area. The main deity is Lord Shiva in the form of Moolastaneswara, and the temple is associated with the Shaiva saint Appayya Dikshitar who is said to have visited and composed verses here in the 16th century.

The temple architecture shows layers of different periods — the original 11th-century core surrounded by later additions and gopurams added during the Vijayanagara period. Less visited than the Thalpagiri Ranganath Swami Temple, which means a quieter experience. Pilgrims come primarily on Shivaratri and on Mondays; other times it is calm and accessible.

A story
Sri Moolastaneswara Swamy Temple is one of the oldest Shaiva temples in Andhra Pradesh, with inscriptions and structural evidence dating to the 11th century. It sits in the Mulapeta area of Nellore city and remained an active place of worship through successive kingdoms that controlled the region — Chola, Vijayanagara, Nayaka, and Mughal — which makes it a rare continuous thread through the district's layered history.
